Four years ago, Bon Secours Bereavement Center, Comfort Zone Camp, and Full Circle Grief Center came together with the goal of providing an opportunity for the community to come together and discuss a very difficult topic- grief. All three organizations realized a gap in bereavement education in the Richmond area and decided to partner together to address this need.
In November 2012, we offered Richmond’s 1st Grief Summit on National Children’s Grief Awareness Day. The event was held at St. Christopher’s School and the keynote speaker was Maria Trozzi, M.Ed., a national renowned bereavement expert. After her discussion on Grieving Communities, three panelists shared their “real life” experiences about their grief journey. Discussion topics included building resilience, and role of the family, friends, and community.
In February 2014, the three organizations partnered again to add a professional component to the community conversation. The 2nd Annual Grief Summit focused on Grief and Families by offering a professional training as well as an evening panel discussion. Maria Trozzi, M.Ed. returned to lead the conversation and shared her thoughts about grief and the family system. Breakout sessions were led by local professionals, such as Dr. Matt Bitsko from VCU Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Department, Nicole Pries, LCSW, and Jill Fitzgerald, LCSW. The evening panel discussion included three individuals touched by loss who were willing to share their personal challenges and ways of coping with a significant loss in their lives.
The 4th Annual Grief Summit RVA is again brought to you by Bon Secours Bereavement Center, Comfort Zone Camp, and Full Circle Grief Center.
